We Got Wood - 48.26 - Thompson to Miss Rest of Season

Post by 7teen » Wed Oct 20, 2021 10:03 am

There is never a good time for a major injury, but late in the season, with the team playing the best baseball it ever has, and trying to run down the teams holding the wild card spots definitely isn't the best time. And that is exactly what Portland and young pitching superstar Chris Thompson now face. The 23 year old lefty left Friday's game against Sacramento in the first inning citing pain in his shoulder. X-rays and MRIs reveled a torn labrum in Thompson's throwing shoulder that will force him out the remainder of the season.

"It's a real tough blow for not just the team, but for Chris" commented Lumberjacks general manager Chris Wilson. "He was really getting things dialed in over his last 8 or 9 starts and felt he was going to be a real force for us down the stretch. But now our focus is on making sure he heals up properly, rehabs well, and can be a contributing factor for us next season."

Thompson will undergo surgery early this week to repair the torn labrun in his shoulder. A realistic time table has Thompson missing around 7 months which would have him back sometime next spring. "We aren't going to rush things right now" added Wilson. "As of now, yes, optimistically he could return for spring training next season. But we want Thompson to get this fixed right. If we have to wait a few weeks or months, then so be it. Fortunately for us, we have some depth still and can ride this out for next season. But I'm sure Chris will want to get back out there as soon as he feels ready."

Wilson nor Portland manager Farri Agymah were ready to name Thompson's replacement for the rotation heading into the next sim. A sim that sees Portland take on Wild Card contending teams Chicago and Nasvhille. Chicago is pretty well locked in to a post-season spot at the moment while Nashville is in a similar spot as Portland looking up at the 4 teams in the post-season now as wild cards. Looking at the roster of Portland, options for Thompson's spot could be Matt Alicea or Rafael Gomez. Alicea has struggled this season out of the pen so perhaps a shift to the rotation could turn him around some. Gomez on the other hand has been the team's closer for most of the season but has found and developed a nasty changeup to give him a 3rd pitch. The team could also shift Juan Martinez back to his original spot in the rotation, but Martinez has been about as good as can be out of the bullpen these last two seasons.

Looking at the farm, Antonio Garcia is an option. Garcia saw action in the rotation in 2046 and 2047 but has been in Triple-A all 2048. Otto Bowness, who also saw action in those seasons, is also an option and could replace Thompson as a lefty.
