We Got Wood - 48.09 - They'll Break Your Heart Everytime

Post by 7teen » Tue Aug 31, 2021 10:24 am

Just when you start to think things are turning around and your favorite franchise is going to win the Pacific League Spring Training Championship, they'll break your heart. The Portland Lumberjacks went 4-6 in their final 10-game stretch of the spring to finish with a 16-14, 1 game behind the vile spewing Mad Popes and Bears who finished atop the division. The 16-14 record put the Lumberjacks in a logjam in the division in the end as 3 teams finished with that record, giving the Pacific division 5 teams within one game of each other at the conclusion of spring.

"We really wanted that trophy" said GM Chris Wilson as his team packed up from spring to embark on their opening day trip to Vancouver. "I guess we'll just have to win the one at the end of the season" he concluded.

No Injuries Heading into Opening Day
The squad is pleased to announce that no one will enter the 2048 season on the injured list. Aside from a slight scare with Ken Sparks in the second spring sim, the Lumberjacks couldn't have been more blessed with solid health through spring and into the regular season. Of course there are times a minor injury here or there helps solve the last few roster spots and waiver wire decisions.

Speaking of Roster
The Lumberjacks front office will now be tasked with trimming the 38 guys still remaining on the Spring Training roster down to 27 guys before opening day this week in Vancouver. The team currently has 20 pitchers and 18 position players it must trim down to the roster limit. "We have a good idea on most of the guys" commented Wilson. "Right now we are looking at 13-14 position players and a similar number of pitchers, depending on the route we take. There's a very good chance we carry 14 pitchers on the opening day squad, though many of the guys we keep may be on restricted innings out of the bullpen as we have 4-5 guys we want to see get a bulk of the innings. A lot of that will come down to the final few roster spots and whether guys have options left or not. Those decisions will be made over the next day or two."

Wilson commented that catcher So Huynh, outfielder Jiao-long Ma, second baseman Lewis Cairns, and pitchers Paul Randolph, and Rusty Turner have already booked flights back to Quincy to start the season in Triple-A, leaving 5 more roster cuts to be made before opening day. All 5 of those guys had plenty of options remaining. It also indicates the team will be focusing on a few more pitchers to send down as 18 arms to remain on the roster.
