We Got Wood - 48.08 - Spring Winning Ways

Thanks to a 7-3 second spring run, the Portland Lumberjacks have themselves square in the hunt for the Frick League Pacific Spring Training Division Title. Yes, it's a thing this year but only if Portland wins the division. Portland sits 12-8 in the division with 3 other teams which could very well be a preview for the regular season come April through September. Of course, one could also take Joe "Debbie Downer" Geoghegan's mindset and think "spring training results are meaningless".

No Runs For You
Pitching ruled again over this 10 game stretch as the Lumberjacks pitching was stingy. Lumberjacks pitching allowed just 29 runs over the 10 game stretch (2.9 per) and that total was inflated thanks to a 9-8 extra inning win against Seattle. Portland arms allowed 2 or fewer runs in 7 contests, two of which still resulted in losing efforts by the good guys. Lorenzo de' Medici is showing signs of returning to Egan Award form this spring. He appeared in 5 contests over this stretch, compiling 5 innings of no hit, no run baseball in which he struck out 13 batters. He's allowed only 2 runs this spring and the front office has seen about all they need to out of Lorenzo this spring to know he's ready.

Ma, Where's the Meatloaf
Jiao-long Ma has already been told he won't be on the opening day roster. The young prospect split time last year between A-AA and saw only 38 games at Double-A. He'll be sent to Triple-A Quincy to start the season but its not stopping him from tearing it up during his spring training invite. Ma went 8 for 21 with 8 walks, a homerun, 4 runs scored, and a pair of RBI over this 10 game stretch to at least open some more eyes in the Portland front office and attract a few more fan likes in the process. Andrew Gallagher also poured on some offensive support, belting 4 homeruns this sim while driving in 7 RBI. He went 9 for 20 this sim.

Don't Scare Us!
Ken Sparks suffered a mild abdominal strain in his first start of the sim. He left the game after just 1.2 innings of work. Team trainers and doctors said the removal was only precautionary and that Sparks was fine. After a few days of rest, Sparks returned to make his second start of the sim, a solid effort that resulted in 2 runs on 6 hits, a pair of walks, and 5 Ks against Hawaii in the Lumberjacks 3-2 win over the Tropics. The Sparks injury and the usage of de' Medici and other bullpen arms is fueling some speculation the team may shut down some of the regulars for the final 10 games of spring, jeopardizing the team's chances at the Spring Training Pacific Division title.
