When the Lumberjacks drafted Ken Sparks with the second overall selection in the 2046 draft, they knew he'd be a pretty good pitcher. However, it's unsure whether many felt the young hurler would turn out to be "this good". After an outstanding rookie season that saw Sparks post a 5.3 WAR, the league and team announced today that Sparks has swept all of the rookie and pitching categories for the team and league. Sparks was named the recipient of the League's Gillstrom Award given to the Frick League's top rookie, and he also claimed the team Rookie of the Year and Pitcher of the Year honors for the Lumberjacks. He's the first player to ever claim multiple team awards in the same season.
Sparks finished his rookie season with a 12-12 overall record. His 12 wins tied him for the team lead with fellow rookie Chris Thompson. Sparks finished 2nd in team ERA behind Thompson with a 3.13 mark but led the team in 2047 with 210.0 innings pitched. He was second in strikeouts behind reliever Lorenzo de' Medici. Sparks K'd 191 batters to de' Medici's 200.
Sparks' win of the Gillstrom Award becomes the second individual league award won in Portland team history. It follows de' Medici's Egan Award he won back in 2046. Sparks also finished in a tie for 6th in the Frick League Nebraska voting this season. The aforementioned Chris Thompson also placed 6th in the Frick League Gillstrom ballot.
Sparks along with many other arms both mentioned and not mentioned here helped lead the Lumberjacks staff to the 4th fewest runs allowed in the Frick League in 2047, the best showing in franchise history by a Lumberjacks staff.
