It didn't exactly lead to fans beating down the gates to get in as just under 28,000 fans turned out for "Shoeless Night" at the ball park Thursday night to watch the Lumberjacks defeat the Sacramento Mad Popes by the score of 5-1. But the night was a success on the scoreboard and also for Lumberjacks starter Steve Warren who turned in 6 innings, allowing just 1 unearned run on the night. Warren scattered 4 hits and walked a pair in the win. Bobby Horne belted a pair of homeruns to lead the offense as fans witness four homeruns on the night by the good guys.
However the night was marked with a black eye when 4 fans were rushed to the hospital with an apparent foot fungus. It was first reported that the fans went to the emergency room following the game where it was determined the quartet of baseball lovers had stepped in something while at the game not wearing shoes. They were reportedly given some "cream" that took the problem away. General Manager Chris Wilson declined comment on the night, only stating that he thought the night was a success, outside of a slight "odor issue".
BBA Commissioner Matthew Rectenwald, concerned over fan safety at the ball park, issued a statement over the weekend stating that "shoeless nights" were no longer allowed at Brewster Baseball Stadiums. He also stated he hoped for the "health and a speedy recovery for the fans at the ball park" and stated that fans, if they ever come public, were welcome to any BBA game at any stadium this season.
Portland Assistant General Manager Kate Fiscus followed up with Rectenwald's comments in a press conference following the finale of the series against Sacramento, a game Portland also won 7-6 in Portland, by stating "I feel bad for the fans at the game. I support Rectenwald's decision to ban shoeless in the BBA. Nights. Ban Shoeless nights", Kate followed up with.
Days later however, Fiscus was fined an undisclosed amount by Rectenwald. The commissioner reported the fine was for an apparent obscene gesture Fiscus made to the media following the statement.

Foot fungus stories bring back unpleasant memories of my three years in the US Army lo those many years ago. I shan't go into detail.
