We Got Wood - 46.19 - Lugo Collects First Franchise Cycle

Post by 7teen » Mon Mar 15, 2021 5:50 pm

It has been over 6 seasons now since the Portland Lumberjacks franchise has been in existence and it hadn't seen a major feat or milestone yet. No winning seasons. No 3 homerun games. Not even a no-hitter. However, Jorge Lugo can cross one feat missing from the books off the list for the franchise: Team's first ever cycle.

In the Lumberjacks game Saturday Night against the rival Mounties, Lugo collected the 4 hits needed for a cycle. He had a triple in the first inning, crossing the hardest of the quartet of hits off the list. He followed that up with a double in the 3rd inning. Trailing 3-1, Lugo belted a solo homerun to not only cut into the deficit but also knock off the third and final extra base hit, leaving himself just a single shy of the cycle.

With his team still down 3-2, Lugo laced a 1-out single off Raul Garcia to complete the feat. The game was stopped momentarily to celebrate.

"It was nice doing this in front of the home fans for sure" added Lugo after the game. "I also guess it meant a little more to them considering it was against Vancouver and the team came out on the winning side in the end."

After the Lugo single, Vancouver pitchers proceeded to walk 3 consecutive batters that loaded the bases and forced two runs in. A sac fly plated a third run in the 8th inning giving Portland the 5-3 win. Lugo did not bat again. He completed the cycle with 4 plate appearances on the night.

Following the game, the team asked Lugo to donate something to the team Hall of Fame and Museum to honor the first ever cycle hit by a Lumberjacks player. Lugo donated the bat. He stated after the game "funny thing is, I think I cracked it on that single so no better time to break out a new one than after that".

Lugo went hitless in the team's following game against Des Moines but did collect 5 hits in the team's final 4 games of the sim so all is good on the bat front.

Congrats to Lugo. Loved that guy when he was with the Popes, but my damn impulsiveness resulted in him being traded away.

I hope he sucks against me.

Life is a bit more beautiful when time is measured by the half inning rather than the half hour.
