We Got Wood - 46-18 - Wait, Was that 5 Wins in a Sim?

Post by 7teen » Sun Mar 14, 2021 9:26 am

Why yes, yes it was! We talked about it after a successful spring about how this current Lumberjacks team may be getting the fanbase's hopes up for a let down season. Well the team thus far isn't exactly showing signs of letting the fans down anytime soon. Sure, we are still 24-27 as a team and far from being a playoff team, but hell, we are halfway to last season's win total already and haven't gotten 1/3 of the way through the regular season yet. No, the front office doesn't think the team is a serious contender for the post-season this season, but sitting just 3.5 games back of Hawaii right now for 4th in the division feels pretty damn good right now.

The team boosted it's standings thanks to a solid 5-2 sim against teams from within the division this past week. The club won the finale against Seattle to keep from being swept by the red-hot Storm. The club then parlayed that into taking 2 of 3 against both Sacramento and Vancouver. The club still has one final game against the Mounties that will decide whether the Lumberjacks win the series or if Vancouver can salvage a split. With a gauntlet of a road schedule coming up in June, Portland could really use one more good sim to close out May.

Jorge Lugo and Millard Younger
You know, there are some weeks you're scrambling just to find a player worthy of an award. You slap the title on some schlub who hit .250 because he hit 3 homeruns so he looked worthy while the rest of the team was hot garbage. But then there are weeks like this where you have two worthy candidates and not recognizing both is a disservice to the guy left out. So we are naming both Lugo and Younger hitters of the week. Lugo probably would have gotten it this week thanks to his 17 hits in 32 at-bats for a .531 average. He also led the team with 9 RBI. But not mentioning Younger's 13 hits in 26 at-bats, along with a homerun and 7 RBI wouldn't have been fair. Our top two hitters in the lineup combined for 30 hits over a 7 game stretch. It's starting to become clear why we had such a good week!

Steve Warren
Warren is starting to look like the guy we hoped he would when we drafted him last season and is really starting to make the team excited about things to come. This week, Warren went 2-0 in his 2 starts, the wins coming against Seattle and Vancouver. Against the Storm, Warren went 6 shutout innings, allowing just 3 hits and a walk while striking out 4. Against the Mounties, he went 6.1 innings, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 3. So that's 12.1 innings of 2 runs on 6 hits and a walk. We can't ask for much more out of the rookie!

Kate's Kookies Highlight of the Week
We'd love to just be simple and say the 5-2 week. But, one of those wins was epic...

Trailing 7-3 to the Mad Popes, Portland rallied late scoring 2 in the 7th and 2 in the 8th to tie the game and force extra innings. The game remained tied at 7 apiece all the way to the 14th inning. There, the Mad Popes scored a run thanks to a pair of singles and then a wild pitch by Matt Alicea to take an 8-7 lead. But perhaps this isn't a normal year in Portland.

In the bottom half, Jaime Ramirez laced a 2-2 pitch deep over the second base bag for an infield single. Younger came to the plate next and saw several Manuel Andres pitches. Younger worked the count full and then fouled off a 3-2 pitch. On the 7th pitch of the at-bat, Younger connected and got all of one. His fly ball to deep left landed an estimated 388 feet over the left field wall for a walk-off, 2 run blast to send the 37,489 Lumberjacks fans home happy. Younger's walk-off homerun is this week's Kate's Kookies, Highlight of the Week!
