After the recent news of the passing of Chicago Black Sox General Manager Vic Caleca, the Portland Lumberjacks front office pondered the best way to honor their fellow GM. Chris Wilson announced this morning that the club would retire the #39 from being used at any point by a Portland Lumberjacks player.

"We wanted to honor the memory of Vic Caleca in some way" commented Wilson. "While we had issues with one another over the usage of blueprints and master plans, I respected Vic's determination to run a top notch team up in Chicago. The obstacles he had to overcome, dealing with ownership in Chicago, allowed me to admire the man even over our own disagreements. As an organization, we have decided to retire the number 39 from our organization as a symbolic gesture to the year Vic came into the league, 2039. We will present new GM of Chicago, Jim Cox, with a framed Portland #39 jersey in our game at Chicago next month. The official retirement ceremony will take place when Chicago comes to Portland on August 26."

Despite the franchise only existing for 7 seasons, the Portland Hall of Fame and Museum is one of the more extensive team Hall of Fames in the Brewster Baseball Association. To date, not a single player has been enshrined nor a number retired due to the short nature of the franchise's existence.

The #39 in honor Vic Caleca will be the team's first retired number.
