We Got Wood - 46.02 - Can Young Arms Save Franchise?

Post by 7teen » Thu Feb 11, 2021 9:11 am

It is no secret.... Portland was terrible in 2045. The club ranked dead last in runs scored and was in the same spot in runs allowed. While the offense could be described as putrid, there isn't an adjective fair or bad enough to describe the pitching staff in 2045. With just 48 wins a season ago, the organization has hit rock bottom. But there are hopes the franchise can rebound in 2046 thanks to some young arms the organization intends to call up.

"We debated it a lot after the Landis series was over about what to do" commented assistant GM Kate Fiscus, "and we've decided our fans deserve a little hope after last season. So we are going to call up several of our young arms for 2046 and hope they at least make us a little more competitive next season within the division."

At the top of that list is Steve Warren, last year's 5th overall draft pick by the Lumberjacks. Warren was most likely ready for the BBA straight out of the draft, but the organization opted to send him to Single-A first. He made just 4 appearances there before shooting his way up through Double-A and Triple-A where he was eventually shut down for the season. He made 6 appearances at each of those stops and now appears ready for his BBA debut this season. "A lot of talk was about Phil Cole last year, and rightfully so" said Fiscus. "We are optimistic and hopeful that Warren can have a solid career with us here in Portland."

After Warren, the Lumberjacks have a whole host of guys that may not be aces of a staff, but can hopefully help solidify the staff in Portland for seasons to come. Many of these guys are built in a similar mold and the front office is hopeful they can chip in close to 100 innings each in some capacity as either a starter or reliever. Juan Gomez, acquired in the Pedro Gomez deal with the Black Sox, is the first candidate on that list. Already on the 40-man roster due to being Rule 5 eligible this season, Gomez posted a 3.4 WAR last season in Triple-A and is as ready as he's going to be for the BBA. The same can be said for lefty Matt Alicea, acquired from San Fernando in the Gusby Pinkerton trade. Alicea had a 1.7 WAR last season and still lacks a little development on his slider, but could develop some this spring or maybe adapt from his AAA role and slide into the bullpen for ample innings usage there.

The next pair are still wild cards for being on the roster next season, but indications are they will be. The organization wants to see how Frank Walbourne, acquired from Long Beach in the Ray Verhoeve trade, handles and develops during spring training. Walbourne posted a 1.7 WAR in AAA and still has some areas to improve upon with his ability but is most likely better than some alternatives the Lumberjacks have out there. If Walbourne boosts his ability in the spring, expect him to debut on the roster on opening day. Antonio Garcia on the other hand doesn't have the high ceiling like some of the other guys have but appears as ready as he'll ever be for a shot at the BBA. His 4.4 WAR in Triple-A last season shows he's done all he can there and deserves a shot at the big league level.

While these 5 guys probably aren't going to turn a 40 win team into a post-season contender overnight, fans and the front office are hopeful they can at least build this team back to a team that won't lose 100 games in 2046 and can at least bring this team back to respectability.

I just checked. For some reason he’s actually listed as an RP despite being used solely as a starter last season.
