The Portland Lumberjacks limped through April to a lackluster 10-17 record, however, the typically inept offense in years past performed slightly better than the past seasons. The Lumberjacks have been the worst offense in the Frick League over the last few seasons but they climbed the ladder, slightly, to be at least considered one of the worst bottom third teams in the Frick. A lot of that boost in April was thanks to the solid start by Manuel Martinez.

"I'm accepting my new role this year" commented Martinez on his solid start, "and so far, it's working."

Martinez, who had typically been in a power spot or run driving in position in the lineup, was shifted to the leadoff spot this year in part due to the departure of Robert Menzies. It's paid dividends thus far as Martinez led the team in on-base percentage in April with a .405 on-base percentage in the opening month. The OBP was thanks to his 21 hits and 11 walks he accumulated for the month.

Of course Martinez didn't change his overall approach. He was still looking to go yard. Manuel hit 6 homeruns in April which were the second most on the team for the month behind only Andrew Gallagher's eight. For the month, Martinez hit .309/.405/.632 with 6 homeruns and 13 runs batted in.

The 30 year old platooning firstbaseman is off to his best start of his tenure with the Lumberjacks thus far. He signed a 6 year deal back in 2043 and has been a considerable let down in his time with the club. Perhaps a new role in 2045 will help jumpstart his final years with the club.
