We Got Wood - 45.17 - Portland Sticks to Script, Drafts Pitching First

Post by 7teen » Tue Dec 08, 2020 11:25 am

At one point during the 2045 amateur draft process, it appeared the Portland brass would break tradition and draft a position player. With a few, positive looking middle infielders on the board in what is turning out to be a solid draft class, many couldn't have blamed the Lumberjacks if they had. However, when their time came to make a pick, the Lumberjacks front office stuck with the script of the previous 5 drafts and selected another pitching with the first round, taking Steve Warren from the college of the U.S. Marine Corps Fighting Leathernecks.

Warren, a "near 6 foot", 170 pound southpaw, is slightly more unique than previous draft picks by Portland. "He can pitch for us now" commented Lumberjacks General Manager Chris Wilson. "He's that developed and polished. He's not going to, but he could" Wilson added.

The 21 year old college hurler has had some success while at the college ranks, posting an ERA under 2.00 his first two years at the Marine Corps before slight bump in the road this season. His ERA has gone up and his strike out totals have gone down, which is a little concerning for some scouts, but Portland stuck with the pick.

Warren has excellent stuff with solid movement and control He also possesses four solid pitches which most scouts put in the "positive" column for Warren's ability. The drawbacks to Steve currently appear to be his lack of stamina and his velocity. The former of which Portland's front office don't seem as concerned with.

"I've never been big on stamina" added Lumberjacks assistant GM Kate Fiscus. "There are plenty of guys who are good but don't last very long."

The velocity on the other hand may be something to keep an eye on as Warren approaches the big leagues.

The front office also stated the team doesnt' expect any issues in signing Warren. Both the team and his agent are in talks now and a deal should be very simple to reach once the draft concludes.

Better to be good and short than bad and have stamina haha I guess. I think. Maybe.

Hey, if Kate says it's good then I side with Kate!
