If the front office and fans hoped that, after losing several younger talented players to trades, that veterans coming in would be the answer then everyone has been sorely mistaken. Portland went out this off-season and brought in several aging veterans in hope to add "something" to the team and thus are, they've added pretty much nothing.

"It is still early but our veteran guys haven't performed very well" commented Lumberjacks assistant general manager Kate Fiscus. "We need a lot more out of these guys if we want to maintain at least a level of competitiveness this season in Portland."

Fiscus is referencing the poor starts to the quartet of Hector Amaral, Albert Gaona, Aaron Stone, and Lee McHone who have a combined -1.2 WAR through the team's first 23 games of the season.

While many probably didn't expect much from McHone and Stone other than maybe helping put a few fannies in the seats, the performances of bother Amaral and Gaona have been slightly disappointing to say the least. In 5 starts, Amaral is 0-3 with an 8.34 ERA and 1.72 WHIP. He's only made it past 5 innings on two occasions, which could make it easier than expected to avoid his vesting option at season's end. Gaona has been equally bad, recording just 2 hits in 37 plate appearances. Gaona, who has been given platoon duties against lefty pitching, is yet to record an extra base hit. As for what could be done, Fiscus commented:

"For guys this age, not much. I'm used to handling younger guys and helping them with their slumps and problems. This is a little out of my area of expertise. These guys are already experienced and hard to change at this point. But I may be able to figure a thing or two out."

As for whether the team may look to some of the "youth", Fiscus concluded "it is unlikely we'll start anyone's clock this season. We don't think it is in the organization's best interest to do that in 2045. We have a few other options of some guys in Triple-A who are already under contract we may look at if these guys continue slumping into and through May."

Haha... Yeah I guess those 33 innings he pitched for Long Beach last season really did him in lol
