We Got Wood - 44.08 - Wareham to Play 2B!?

After a very disappointing 2043 season that saw the Lumberjacks offense finish dead last in runs scored in the Frick League despite making numerous attempts to improve during the season, the Portland front office decided something must be done to climb the rankings in 2044. And attempt to climb the rankings they did by signing....... Reece Wareham?

Ok, maybe not.

Wareham signed this week with the Lumberjacks for $5 million with an option for 2045 at the same rate. Rumors are now swirling that the 36 year old veteran is in the mix to be the starting 2B for the team in 2044 despite accumulating 1.3 WAR total over the last 4 seasons which includes his -0.2 last year with Seattle. So a guy who hasn't hit over the Mendoza line since 2038 is supposed to be the cure for the offensive woes in 2044?

"Well, we aren't putting all of our eggs in the Reece Wareham basket" commented Lumberjacks GM Chris Wilson. "We have a lot of eggs in the 'I hope some guys rebound in 2044" basket. Nonetheless, we think Reece can be an added bonus to the bottom third of our lineup thanks to his power and ability to get on-base."

Despite the low batting average over the last half decade, Wareham does still possess a little pop and OBP potential. He's hit 75 homeruns over the last 4 seasons while getting on base around 33% of the time during that span. He was pretty bad in 2043 with the Storm, posting career lows pretty much across the board.

On paper, Wareham looks a lot like backup catcher Paco Diaz who has seen some success in Portland over his stint. Heading into spring training, Wareham will compete with Nikita Schipper (superior glove man) and Tomas Valadez for the gig at 2B.

As a second baseman, he'd be pretty good at third.

This is a sentence no ballplayer ever wants to read: “On paper, (he) looks a lot like backup catcher Paco Diaz ...”

Nor would I consider an OPS+ of 69 in nearly 900 plate appearances "some success".
