Let's be honest up front.... Not many guys really want to play for the Portland Lumberjacks. At least, not freely during the off-season. Granted, Portland has been able to lure some guys in over time with some hefty pay raises, but money speaks louder than, well, playing for the Lumberjacks. But as bad as guys loathe playing in Portland, they REALLY don't want to go to Wichita. The team was run by a joker to start, it's broke, never had a winning season, and their pets heads are falling off. It's a disgrace of a BBA organization. So needless to say Julio Valasco wasn't too pleased when he found out he'd be playing in 2044 for Wichita, and not Portland in 2044 thanks to a paperwork snafu on the Lumberjacks side.
"No fucking way would I have signed with Wichita" said Valasco during the recent winter meetings. Valasco wasn't actually present at first but rushed out to Bumfuckegypt, Wisconscin when finding out he was going to Wichita just weeks after signing a 2 year deal to play with Portland. "Hell, I didn't want to go to Portland either but my agent thought it was a good deal so we signed early just so I could enjoy the rest of my off-season. Now here I am in Wisconsin trying to get to the bottom of this. So much for enjoying an off-season."
Valasco's agent was also at the meeting trying to get the decision reversed but was having little luck. "Those stupid dumbasses in Portland screwed this shit up" Valasco's agent commented. "There probably isn't anything I can do but I'm trying."
Both Valasco and his agent are upset over the fact they signed a 2 year deal to play for Portland in 2044 and 2045. But after the contract was agreed upon, the Lumberjacks front office failed to submit the follow up documents that placed Valasco on the club's 40-man roster. Due to the timing of the signing, Valasco was left unprotected by the club and available for the Rule 5 draft. Wherein Wichita took Valasco with the 2nd overall pick. Shying away from the team's mistake, Portland GM Chris Wilson commented:
"We wanted Valasco but mistakes happen. We aren't sold on the fact Wichita won't be returning Valasco back to us at some point anyway. They're broke. They'll likely need a donation of drinks for the player vending machines at some point anyway. The Brothers Allred like all of those funky Mt. Dew flavors so perhaps we can work out an agreement down the road."

Hmmm, this could lead to some next-level game theory...
Before the Rule 5 Draft, sign a good player to a modest contract but build in a ridiculous player incentive, say 20 at-bats earns him $20M. Leave said player in DFA and exposed to the draft and watch some unsuspecting team walk into your bear trap. Hilarity ensues.

Wow. That’s Vinnie-level thinking - Chicago may have to write that into The Blueprint (TM)!
