We Got Wood - 43.32 - Valadez Injured. Who Replaces Him?

The last thing you want to see when you're a team on the rise with higher expectations and a thin roster are injuries. Two weeks into the 2043 season the Lumberjacks face their first major injury. Tomas Valadez, Portland's starting secondbaseman, suffered a strained hamstring during a collision at secondbase in Portland's game against Hawaii Saturday night that will force the Lumberjacks' middle infielder out of action for the next 5 to 6 weeks.

"It's a tough blow for sure" commented Portland manager Pedro Medina after the game, a game the Lumberjacks won 3-1, "we'll just have to get through it and have some other guys step up and fill Valadez's role on this team for a month or so. We'll be fine. Fortunately we have some veteran guys who we feel can do the job."

At this point, it appears that either Jose Rios or Nikita Schipper will be the likely duo asked to step up. Rios, if you recall, was the player Portland took on thanks to a cushion in salary cap this off-season. He's had some history of BBA success but his ability has severely dropped off in recent years. Schipper has had plenty of experience playing for the Lumberjacks since being drafted 49th overall in the expansion draft. Schipper, the superior glove man, filled in for Valadez over the final 3 games since the injury, going 3 for 10 at the plate with a pair of runs scored and an RBI.

"For now, we'll probably lean on Schipper just because of his superior defense" added in Medina. "But Rios' veteran leadership will be valuable in spots as well. We'll need them both to help fill in while Valadez recovers."

Valadez has been a 3.2 WAR player for Portland the last two seasons total since being picked up on waivers from the Vancouver franchise. The switch hitter is due back sometime in mid to late May.
