We Got Wood - 43.27 - Lumberjacks Waive/DFA Dempsey

Post by 7teen » Sun Jun 14, 2020 8:33 am

The news came as a shock to many. Some couldn't believe it while some felt it was a move that needed to be done. Some were lefty in tears (mainly GM Chris Wilson) while some shrugged it off and moved on. But facing a roster crunch and needing to get the squad down to 27 for opening day, the Portland Lumberjacks announced today that they would be waiving and designating for assignment Steve Dempsey. Dempsey sits 78 hits shy of 3,000 for his career.

"It was a difficult decision, but one the organization needed to make if it expects to turn the corner as a franchise" commented assistant GM Ted Dunn speaking on behalf of the organization. "We just didn't have the room on the roster for Steve. We admire his veteran leadership and wanted to keep it around on the club, but his spot was needed for other players and we had to do it. We hope he'll stick around with the organization and head to Quincy to play with some of our Triple-A guys, but that decision is up to Steve."

Dempsey, the 17 year BBA veteran, was entering the 2043 season with 2,922 hits and an outside shot at reaching 3,000. At the age of 37, many wonder if he'll get there. It would have helped his hall of fame candidacy post retirement to have gotten the 3,000 hits. His 637 doubles and 892 stolen bases make for another solid resume, but his low WAR totals will likely cost him in the end. Dempsey refused to comment on the situation.

When asked why he was speaking for the team and not Wilson, Dunn responded "he's a little emotional right now. Dempsey and Wilson had been together for 17 years. He had wanted to see Steve get to 3,000 hits with one of his organizations. We aren't saying it won't happen, but his chances will take a huge hit. Wilson is currently sending out flyers to teams to see if they'll pick up and play Steve. He was recently on the phone with the Aviators and Hurricanes over in the Johnson League, both teams that could use a little excitement of a 3,000 hit chase with their organizations this season."
