We Got Wood - 42.10 - The Departed

Post by 7teen » Tue Mar 24, 2020 10:28 am

In the last TN, we discussed the New Faces Portland fans can expect to see this year in a Lumberjacks jersey, this one will focus on the players who have left the club for other pastures for the 2042 season and where those pastures will be. All in all, seven players on last year's roster are going elsewhere this season.

Brandon Howeth Arneson, Jr - Arneson and Joe both left in a trade to Long Beach that brought Portland back some younger pieces. Arneson started 133 games for Portland last year in CF and produced a solid 1.0 WAR thanks to elite level defense that produced a +12.5 ZR at the position. The Lumberjacks felt Arneson was expendable thanks to prospects like Miguel Cortez who are ready to make the jump to the BBA. Cortez may be a better offensive option than Arneson so the club is optimistic to see a rise in WAR from the CF position this season and Cortez is equally as skilled at the position defensively.

Scotts Joe - Joe slid in as the Portland closer mid-way through last season and had some success racking up some saves. It remains to be seen the effect losing Joe will have on the bullpen and the front office. Owner David Wallace insisted we add a "hometown player" to our roster and Joe was always the "defacto hometown guy" even though he was from the dreaded city of Vancouver. Joe recorded 14 saves last year but was plagued with control problems. The Lumberjacks got Corbin Valentin back in the trade who the team hopes can either eat some innings as a starter in the near future or be a solid RP conversion and likely a better RP option than Joe over the next few seasons.

Feliciano Rafael - Rafael heads to Charm City where the Jimmies hope he's the missing piece to a deep post-season push and Rafael hopes to be on a more competitive team. Much has been made of Rafael's injury history and it was little secret that the Lumberjacks signed him with the intent of flipping him down the road. The Lumberjacks were able to flip their top starting pitcher from 2041 for a replacement arm in Verhoeve (mentioned in the new faces TN), Guerrer at 1B (also mentioned) and prospect Greg Brown who the club hopes adds depth to their future pitching core.

Wen Huang - So it appears Huang was a valuable leader in the clubhouse as we were informed after he had signed on to play for Twin Cities in 2042 after signing a $1.6 million deal with the River Monsters. Huang, our closer to begin the season, struggled in 2041 and produced a -0.9 WAR and a 6.83 ERA. He did record a team high 16 saves but his 1.90 WHIP and that ERA made him a liability at the end of games. Huang will always have a special place in the hearts of Lumberjacks fan as he'll always be the answer to the trivia question: "Which Lumberjacks pitcher recorded the first win in franchise history?"

Bengt de Meza - We picked up de Meza off waivers from Wichita in 2040 in hopes of finding lightning in a bottle with any pitcher we through out there to pitch. He turned in a few flashes of brilliance over 8 starts that season, going 2-2 with a 4.63 ERA. Those flashes turned to disaster in 2041 and we quickly learned why he was let go by Wichita. He pitched 136 innings in Portland last year and posted a 6.75 ERA and 1.76 WHIP which was in large part due to walking 85 guys compared to just 79 strikeouts. He finished 2041 with a full -1.0 WAR. San Antonio signed him up to a minor league deal for 2042. For their sake, I hope he stays there.

Hedde Veenman - Veenman was our 9th round pick in the inaugural expansion draft, coming to Portland from California. In his first season, he showed his former team they had made a mistake by leaving him unprotected as he hit 26 homeruns and produced an .829 OPS and 2.8 WAR, the highest of his career. It earned him a nice arbitration settlement for 2041 where he made over $8 million. The money went to his head. Veenman had a terrible 2041 season, proving perhaps California played their cards correctly. Veenman hit just .169 and saw his OPS drop nearly 200 points in 2041 en route to a -0.3 WAR. He asked for an extension to stay in Portland, but wanted a 5 year deal at his current rate. Seeing several other options in Free Agency, Portland let Veenman walk. It turned out to be the right move. Veenman just recently signed a 2 year deal that will take him overseas to play for the Manama Pearls of the UMEBA where he'll make $4.8 million. I expect Veenman to have an outstanding season in the UMEBA in 2042.

Jon Mick - Mick is finding his first taste of free agency to bit a little bitter at the moment. One of Wilson's statistical pets, Mick was making $20 million a season for Madison and Portland for what feels like forever. The slugging 1B with over 500 homeruns and 1,600 RBI is still sitting on the open market after hitting 46 homeruns and 121 RBI. The Lumberjacks let him go because his 2.8 WAR was enough to land the team a Supplemental 2nd Round pick had he signed with another team. The longer he sits in free agency, the higher the chances are he either signs with a UMEBA team ending his legacy (like Bolt Vanderhugen) or he winds up signing back on with Portland. And you know it'll happen to if he sits there long enough and brings his asking price down! He was Porltand's top hitter for both seasons of existence right now as well as Portland's All-Star selection. The 6-time all-star will be playing baseball in 2042. It just remains to see with whom.
