We Got Wood - 42.07 - Coral Gables Can't Overcome Slow Start

Post by 7teen » Sat Mar 21, 2020 3:02 pm

The Coral Gables Lumberjacks, the Portland Lumberjacks' Florida Prospect League team, gave it a valiant effort, but in the end came up short of the post-season in the FPL. Despite going 16-12 on the short season, the finish was only good enough to finish in a three-way tie for fourth place in the loaded Southeast Division, a division that saw seven of its nine teams finish above the .500 mark.

"We are a little disappointed that we didn't make it into the post-season round" said Lumberjacks manager Rodney Savage. "We just got behind too much at the start and couldn't climb ourselves out of it."

Savage is referencing the team's 1-6 start out of the gate. The squad, which has several names to watch in the Portland organization in the future, finished 15-6 over the final stretch but it wasn't enough.

Matt Normore, a name to watch potentially in Portland this season, hit .477/.521/.757 in 27 games played for the Lumberjacks' prospects team. Normore was acquired by Portland in a trade with Edmonton that saw them send top free agent Julio Alicea to the Jackrabbits. Alicea was taken by Portland in the 31st round of the expansion draft.

Miguel Cortez, the guy slated to fill in at CF for the recently traded Brandon Howeth Arneson, Jr, also had a solid trip south, hitting .364/.409/.525 while in Florida. Cortez was acquired in the same trade with Brooklyn that saw Portland acquire last year's top team rookie Jorge Lopez.

On the pitching side, last season's #3 overall pick in the amateur draft Francisco Franco had a solid trip to Florida going 3-1 with a 3.45 ERA in 6 starts. Franco is expected to be another season or two away from debuting in Portland. He'll most likely make the jump to Double-A Alpine Valley to start the season after spending most of 2041 with the Lumberjacks short-A team in Antigua.

Gusby Pinkerton, the number 2 pick in the draft, didn't have as much success as Franco but it still behind in his development in comparison. Pinkerton posted a 6.54 ERA in his 6 starts, going just 0-1 with a 1.71 WHIP. Pinkerton is expected to begin this season in Single-A Wise after spending last year in Rookie Ball with Bend.
