We Got Wood - 41.17 - The One When We Draft Pitchers

Post by 7teen » Mon Jan 06, 2020 8:16 am

The Amateur Draft has started and possessing two of the first three picks in the 2041 draft, the Lumberjacks wasted very little time in taking two starting pitchers in hopes of building a rotation for the future. While the 2041 draft looks eerily similar to the 2040 version with very little depth and top end talent, the Lumberjacks front office appears pleased with who they drafted this season.

Going 2nd overall in the draft to Porltand was Gusby Pinkerton. Pinkerton, a skinny Canadian, is a left handed starting pitcher with outstanding movement on his pitches. Pinkerton, likely a mid-to late round draft pick in most drafts, goes second overall this year and was a guy Wilson targeted when the final draft class was released.

"Movement is such a key part of this league" said Wilson after the selection of Pinkerton was made. "There isn't a starting pitcher in the draft who has the movement capability on their pitches like Pinkerton does. He's a ground ball guy with 3 very good pitches and is already touching low 90s with his velocity. Considering he's a lefty makes him all the more valuable to us. If by some chance he finds another point or two on his stuff or control then we'll love this pick even more. Nonetheless, we like Gusby already!"

Coming off the board next with the 3rd overall pick (also owned by Portland after failing to sign last year's top draft pick) is Francisco Franco. Franco, a 21 year old pitcher out of college, is already showing signs of being ready for the BBA in another season or two. The tall, right handed pitcher was a former draft pick of the Long Beach Surfers in 2038, opted to go to college. He was a supplemental pick in that draft so he improved his stock quite a bit by going back to college. Wilson had this to say on Franco.

"We honestly had Franco as the top guy on our board. The reason we took him 3rd is because we have to sign that pick and risk losing it all together if we don't. Since we liked Franco the most we figured we'd make sure we got that pick signed and then work back to Gusby. We think we can get both signed this year but wanted to make sure Franco signed. Considering he's returning to the draft for the second time, we assume he'll be more willing to sign this go around rather than sit out for an entire season. Franco has been a top notch and all-star pitcher all the way through his amateur baseball so we are excited to bring him in here with us."

Projecting down the road, neither Gusby nor Franco appear to be #1, Ace caliber pitchers but both project to be solid middle of the rotation guys. Something that could come in handy assuming Portland continues to draft in the top 3 for a few more seasons in hope that the ACE does arrive.
