We Got Wood - 41.15 - The One Where We Sign a Bunch of Minor League Fillers

Post by 7teen » Fri Jan 03, 2020 10:50 am

What made the Bend Wild Things so successful last year and enabled them to capture the Rookie League title in their first season was the fact that the Lumberjacks organization wasn't shy about signing some aging veterans who were willing to take a minor league contract to extend their careers. With the season now underway, and several talented veterans still out there wanting to play, the Lumberjacks front office went out and yet again acquired some guys that can help add some depth the the new organization as it awaits to boost their farm though the traditional draft. Here are some of the names the Lumberjacks acquired:

Lance Robinson - Robinson was a former player for Wilson in Madison from 2034-2039. Having a solid eye and ability to draw walks, the 29 year old will likely have success at whatever level Portland puts him at in 2041.

George Claussen - Claussen has 9 years experience in the BBA. After no one offered him a BBA contract this off-season, the Lumberjacks offered the 29 year old a chance to play in their minor leagues. Knowing Portland is always looking to dominate the minor league circuit, Claussen chose to sign on with the organization in hopes of maybe getting a call up this season or perhaps winning a minor league title.

Mark Sturdivant - The 35 year old who once hit 38 BBA homeruns with Vancouver in 2029 just wasn't ready to call it quits just yet. While he's no longer a threat to play in the BBA, Sturdivant still has some talent that could keep him successful in the minor leagues. Plus he has some name recognition that could help draw a few fans to the games for the Portland farm system.

Dennis Giguere - The guy spent 9 seasons with Twin Cities, which is basically like being a career minor leaguer anyway. He has a negative career WAR, but he can draw a walk. That ability could be useful in a lower level minor league organization.

On the pitching side, the Lumberjacks nabbed a bunch of warty guys that have high stuff but low ratings elsewhere just to add some pitching depth until the draft. Douglas van Osch has spent some time in the BBA with Seattle and Boise Ulbert Vleugal has 3 years of BBA experience and a name we can't pronounce!

When asked about these guys, Wilson added "We aren't sure where they'll play right now. We'll likely plug them into whatever level we need a guy for at that position. Again, we don't have the luxury of several drafts yet to bolster things with young talent so we are piecing these veterans in spots of need. But it wouldn't surprise me if they all found their way onto whatever team is in the hunt down the stretch to help win us another minor league championship."
