We Got Wood - 41.01 - The One Where Harsnett Opts Out

Post by 7teen » Tue Dec 10, 2019 5:48 pm

The first player taken in last season's re-vamped Rule 6 draft, Jayden Harsnett, has opted out of his 3 year contract and will become a free agent this off-season. A solid late season push made Harsnett a semi- valuable player this season. With the solid turn around, the 34 year old felt free agency could be beneficial to his bank account. Special assistant to the General Manager Kate Fiscus spoke on the Harsnett decision.

"After looking over things, we aren't terribly heart-broken over Harsnett's decision" responded Fiscus commenting over the $5 million option he had for next season and the over $4.5 million team option he was to make in 2042. "While Jayden definitely showed some value as both a defensive and offensive threat in the league, his services did not fit into the 'Master PlanTM' of what we are looking to do down the road. While yes, we would have gladly kept his services for next season, we also think we have some other options to explore and the financial flexibility, I love that word, is probably more valuable than Harsnett's production."

Harsnett hit .233/.358/.451 last season with 17 homeruns and 62 runs batted in. He also swiped 17 bases and posted a positive zone rating in both left field and right field as a defender en route to a solid 1.7 WAR in 2040. The WAR number was his highest in 3 seasons since his 2.3 mark posted in 2037 with Las Vegas.

Harsnett returned to the BBA over the winter when his rights were bought to return to the league by Portland for 20 participation points from the Manama Pearls of the UMEBA. Those purchasing rights made Jayden a free agent in the BBA but the Lumberjacks reserved the right to match any offer, which they did when Twin Cities signed the veteran to a 3 year deal lined with options.

"He fit into, and still does, our philosophy here in Portland" added GM Chris Wilson. "We want to emphasize a decent bat with good defense. Jayden did that and we hate to lose him, but as Kate stated, that $5 million might be better allocated elsewhere in 2041."

Maybe we’ll make a run at Harsnett in free agency and see what we can get out of him about the Master Plan (TM) ...
