Unlike the other awards we've handed out where a winner was pretty clear (even if the choices weren't so great), the team's top hitter award could actually go a couple of different ways. Three players were actually decent options as to who to give the award to.
Despite missing some games to injury, Hedde Veenman led the team in WAR with a 2.8 mark. Despite a lower average (.227), Veenman made up for it with a better on-base percentage and slugging. Thanks to a team leading 77 walks, he led the team with a .366 on-base percentage and his 26 homeruns (2nd best on the team) produced a .463 slugging percentage which combined led the team in OPS. However, based on the fact he failed to accumulate 500 plate appearances and only played in 111 games, he did not take home the honor.
Jaime Ramirez on the other hand led the team by playing in 160 games. His 2.2 WAR was second best on the team behind Veenman's, but was largely aided to superior defense. Ramirez led the team with 186 hits as well as a .295 batting average. But the WAR number is probably more indicative of his defense moreso than his offense. And the award says TOP HITTER so Ramirez didn't win either.
Ultimately, the award goes to Wilson favorite Jon Mick. Despite finishing 5th in WAR with a 1.3 clip, Mick led the team in homeruns (33), RBI (103), total bases (283) and runs scored (88). He also finished second behind Veenman in OPS with an .812 mark while also playing in 36 more games.
"Veenman would have been the easiest pick" said Wilson at the press conference today, "he had a great season and led us in WAR. But the injury and missing time just felt wrong. Sure, I'll catch some flack for giving it to Mick but he did have a good offensive season. He was our lone all-star, hit over 30 homeruns, and was the only player with 100 RBI. Yeah, I know 100 RBI and the runs scored are team oriented stats, but this team isn't exactly that good right now. And Mick was still able to drive in the runs. That has to count for something, right?"
Mick now has 100 or more RBI in 8 consecutive seasons. He's also 18 homeruns shy of joining the 500 Homerun Club and is now 27th all-time in Runs Batted In. He's 30th all-time in homeruns.

Mick's a defensible pick - plus, he's your most recognizable player, so your fan base would like it.
