We Got Wood - 40.60 - Perez Claims Top Reliever

Post by 7teen » Thu Dec 05, 2019 1:51 pm

Much like the top rookie ballot for the team award, the top reliever candidate list was pretty bare. Only 8 pitchers finished the season with a positive WAR for the Lumberjacks in 2040, and of those 8, only 4 were relievers. One of those 4 was let go via a trade late into the season so therefore he doesn't qualify. And honestly, he wouldn't have anyway. So that narrowed the list down to 3 possible candidates and the only one worthy of getting any sort of award (or perhaps participation trophy in this instance) was Jose Perez.

The real fascinating part of this story first off might be the fact that Perez was a Rule 5 draft pick by the Lumberjacks. And not just a Rule 5 pick, but the first overall pick in the Rule 5 selection process. The 32 year old pitcher departed Calgary to join the greener pastures of Portland where he pitched in 44 games over the season, logging 64.0 innings total. After Luis Ortega was done blowing saves and sent packing to Charlotte, Perez slid into the closer's role where he saved 11 games on the season. Overall, he posted a 3-4 record and a 4.08 ERA and 1.59 WHIP. Nothing to really write home about for any other team in the league I'm sure. When you add it all up, it totaled to a 0.7 WAR which tied for the 3rd highest on the team among pitchers and led everyone who came out of the bullpen this season.

Despite the sarcastic tones of most of that previous paragraph, it is worth noting that Perez did have his best year to date in the BBA. He did have some decent years with Des Moines, some of which were spent as a starter. He's now accumulated 2.3 WAR for his career over 9 seasons.

Perez will be a free agent this off-season. The Lumberjacks have not indicated whether or not they will participate in the upcoming bidding war that will occur over Perez's services in 2041.
