We Got Wood - 40.24 - A "Nasty" Find

Post by 7teen » Wed Oct 16, 2019 6:59 pm

The year was 1986. Janet Jackson was one of the hot, young female singers of the era. Trying to make a name of herself outside of her brother's shadow, she released the song "Nasty".

Gimme a beat

Sittin' in the movie show
Thinkin' nasty thoughts
Better be a gentlemen
Or you turn me off
That's right, a-let me tell it

Nasty, nasty boys, don't mean a thing
Oh, you nasty boys
Nasty, nasty boys, don't ever change
Oh, you nasty boys

Fast forward to a little later in the 1980s. A wrestling tag team named "The Nasty Boys" are making their rise in the WWF, now the defunct (it's 2040 after all) WWE. They'd defeat the Legion of Doom and their nemesis "The Midnight Rockers" to become tag-team Champions.

Fast Forward to 1989. A movie called "The Nasty Boys" was released. No one has ever seen it. I never have.

In 1990, the only Nasty Boys that ever mattered emerged in the now defunct Major League Baseball (MLB) to help lead the Cincinnati Reds to the 1990 World Series.

Why do we mention all of these "nasty" things? Well, while Vancouver was in town playing the Lumberjacks in Portland, Lumberjacks scouts were pilfering through the Canadian wilderness to find the best Canadian players. And find a player they did. One scout found and eventually signed 16-year old Stan "Nasty boy" Cyr to a minor league contract.

Cyr, a 16-year old right handed pitcher, likely rises to the top of the Lumberjacks top prospects list which is extremely thin at the moment. A pitcher with solid ratings (his movement could use a boost), Cyr possesses three pitches that could all make him a viable middle of the rotation starter one day. One scout in the organization did highlight the concern over a potential stuck changeup that "plagues many a pitcher in the league" but if it develops Cyr could be a solid find.

Lumberjacks GM Chris Wilson commented on the the find of the "Nasty boy".

"It's all part of the Master Plan" said Wilson. "While those bafoons from Canada were down here playing against us, we snuck in overnight and found a player right from under their own noses. It's like war. We bait you into a few regular season games while we raid and pillage your young players right out from under you. The Master Plan is in full effect" Wilson concluded while rubbing his hands together.

The jury is still far from decided on whether or not Cyr will ever amount to much or even make the BBA down the road. Regardless of what happens down the road, he's a nice little find to add to the building of a Portland farm system.

How does one allocate money for "covert operations" in OOTP? Asking for a friend.

Also, this was awesome to read.

Life is a bit more beautiful when time is measured by the half inning rather than the half hour.

Very crafty of you to schedule regular season games against a division opponent. Who'd a thunk they'd fall for that?

I have to agree with Doug - your TNs are on fire. Excellent stuff.
