It was inevitable. Not as much if but when would it happen. Now that it has, the question will be how many more times will it be done? What is being done is Mynorli Gaajlimitz breaking the Portland Lumberjacks single season hits record. In Friday night's game versus Valencia, Gaajlimitz went 3-5. The first hit tied the record held by Ernest McBride at 203. The second hit broke the record.
Fans in Valencia didn't have to wait long to witness the accomplishment. In the top of the first inning, Mynorli singled. He came back to the dish in the top of the 2nd inning where he promptly laced a double, giving him 204 hits on the season and breaking the Portland record. A record that had stood for 8 years.
"It feels good knowing I have the single season hits record" commented Mynorli after the contest, a 5-4 loss to the Stars. "But now that that is out of the way, the focus is now on winning that Brewster title."
"While breaking the record is an amazing feat for anyone, what makes the accomplishment all the more special and amazing is that Mynorli is doing it as a 19 year old rookie" added in manager Mons Raider. "I think everyone saw how special this kid is over the last couple of seasons in the minor leagues, but to be out there as a teenager and doing what he's doing against men is something remarkable. It could be scary to think what he can accomplish in a few years when he has more experience under his belt. I think it is a safe assumption we'll be talking about him breaking the hits record again next year, and the year after, and the year after. Who knows how many times he'll break his own record now."
Gaajlimitz is currently 3rd in the Frick League with a .331 batting average and 5th in on-base percentage at .385. Raider has hinted that he'll rest his regulars for the rest of the season but has stated that doesn't include Mynorli who up to this point is the only player in the Frick League to play in every contest this season. "I want to play every game that I can" stated Gaajlimitz. "He wants to play" added Raider. "I tried to convince him to rest up for the post-season but he's having too much fun out there. If he wants to play every game, I'm not going to deny him that chance."
