Hold My Log - 49.19 - Warren Arbitration Bought Plus One

Post by 7teen » Wed Dec 08, 2021 12:19 pm

And the trend continues. Just days after the team bought out the three arbitration years of Ken Sparks, the club announced this week it has bought out the final two arbitration years of starting pitcher Steve Warren as well as extending him one year beyond arbitration with a 3 year contract extension. The deal will keep Warren, age 25, with the team through age 28.

"As with Sparks and other guys soon, we want to get these guys tied down to a solid contract for the next few years to have a better guess on whatever our financial numbers will be" commented Fiscus. "Warren was the first starting pitcher of this current group of stud arms we have that we drafted. We missed out on buying out his first year this past off-season. We started talks but never got anything finalized. Luckily for us and him, we were all willing to sit back down and get it worked out and it even got us an extra year with Warren before we have to get into the big money talks."

Warren, an all-star last season in the Frick League, is making $2.75 million this season after being awarded that in the off-season via arbitration. He and the team reached an extended 3 year deal that will pay him $5 million next season and then see an increase of $1 million over the next 2 seasons, maxing out at $7 million the final year of the deal in 2052 and paying him an AAV of $6 million over the next 3 seasons. The same AAV as the team is paying in the Ken Sparks deal.

As mentioned, Warren was an all-star last season. Despite a solid 2.83 ERA, his WAR wasn't eye-popping at just 2.4. Nonetheless, the lefty starter has had seasons of 3.4, 2.7, and 2.4 over his 3 BBA seasons in Portland, all three of which fit into the value of WAR for his salary in the front office's mind down the road.

Warren is currently 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA in 2 starts in 2049.
