We Got Wood - 42.62 - Top Starter! This is a Joke, Right?

Post by 7teen » Sun May 24, 2020 9:48 am

Time for my annual acquisition of participation points by creating separate team news articles handing out four separate individual awards to our top players in 2042. Those four awards are: Top Rookie, Top Reliever, Top Hitter, and Top Starting Pitcher. Let's look at our top starting pitcher.

Well, we are serious. I suppose. I mean you have to give the award to someone, right? But, who!? Well, we did have three pitchers win double digit games this year. All 3 won 10 games. Granted, that trio also LOST double digit games as well. Portland used 10 guys to start games in 2042 with four of those starting 25 or more games and three starting a full 33 games. We'll have to go with one of those. So we've narrowed it down to 4.

Of those 4 nominees, three of them are double digit winners. One of them finished 5-19. So...

Well, he's not dead. Maybe to the fans of Portland. But yeah, cross him off.

So we're down to 3 nominees. One of those 3 finished with a positive WAR. Only 1. So he's the winner right?

Well, that guy is 6 foot 8, so not sure about the midget comment. But it has to go to Eduardo Reyes, right? He went 10-10, posted a pitching staff best 1.2 WAR (woof). Can we just leave at that?

But wait, what about Norberto Asconcio!? He won the pitching triple crown for Portland this year. Tied for the team lead in wins with 10. Led the team in strikeouts with 145 (16 more than the guy with 19 losses on his resume) and had the best ERA among the starters at 4.80 (.34 points better in fact). You have to go with him right? I mean the freaking triple crown on the team. But....

Well, if WAR is good for anything then Asconcio had the WORST FREAKING WAR OF ANY OF OUR PITCHERS at -1.1. How is that fucking possible? The guy leads our team in strikeouts, wins, and ERA and he has the WORST WAR? I guess that is what happens when you allow 50 damn homeruns on the season. That's 50 souvenirs that Asconcio helped dish out to fans this season. That wasn't the league worst though (it was 3rd worst)

So what in the hell do we do here? We can't go with Asconcio. Though it would be a very Wilson thing to do to give it the guy who won the team pitching triple crown despite a negative WAR.

Nah, we can't.

Congratulations Eduardo Reyes. Here's your trophy!

I feel your dilemma. Esteban Sanchez at 11-13 with a 5.31 ERA was my ace when it was all said and done.
