Prior to the 2062 season, the Charlotte Flyers signed closer Josh Dougherty to a 3 year contract worth up to $20.25 million to pitch the ninth inning for them.
Dougherty went on to save 44 games that year and 38 in 2063. Those are the two highest single season save totals in franchise history. He was an All-Star in 2062 and also finished second in the voting for the Eagan award.
Dougherty has appeared in 129 games over the last two years, earning 82 saves in 89 opportunities with an ERA of 3.16.
Unfortunately, Dougherty's arm is showing signs of deteriorating. After posting a FIP- of 81in 2062, the big right hander ended 2063 with a 110 mark. His velocity is down and scouts have indicated that both his fastball and his slider are less effective now than they were a year ago.
Now the Flyers are looking to Dougherty to save them money instead of games. Charlotte will be declining their team option, paying him $1 million instead of the $5 million he would have made if he played for the team in 2064.
Fans will surely be upset if he signs on with another team but the Flyers feel that this is the right move for the team going into 2064.
