I was perusing my team stats and I decided to look at my defense a little bit because my ERA is quite a bit better than my FIP. I wasn’t looking for anything in particular but I did find something interesting.
I have turned only 73 double plays in the first 134 games of the season. That puts me on pace for just 88 DP on the year. The next closest team is Jacksonville with 84, on pace for 101.
I went back and looked at the last several seasons, back to 2056 when I entered the BBA and I only found one instance of a team turning fewer than 100 DP in a season. That team was mine in 2061, when we turned only 97.
That seemed odd, so I tried to find any other instances of team’s turning fewer than 100 DP in the last 30 years or so. I went all the way back to 2045 before finding that Louisville only turned 90. There were a couple of others just under 100 in the early 2040’s but Louisville’s 90 was the lowest I found.
My team is on pace to turn the fewest DP in the last 30+ years. I wonder why that is. Maybe some of it has to do with my low opposition OBP of .297 combined with a fairly high HR total of 153, (3% HR%). Maybe it has to do with my JL leading (and 2nd in the BBA) strikeout total of 1,002. Another factor could be that my catchers don’t do a great job of throwing out potential stolen bases at only 18.8% Even with that said, I have given up a league average 104 SB on the year. I can’t seem to find and XBH total vs the singles I’ve allowed but it doesn’t seem like I would have a top 3 ERA in the league if the reason I don’t turn many double plays is because guys are always on second and third instead of first. It seems like that would lead to giving up a ton of runs.
I’m not sure, but it is interesting. Whatever the reason, I don’t really want to change what I’m doing. My team is playing great baseball right now and my pitching staff is in a good spot based on overall performance. I guess we’ll just keep getting them out one at a time.

You're....
-5th in BBA in Hits/9
-1st in the BBA in K%
-2nd in the BBA in BB%
-7th lowest GB%
Seems logical that you're last in double plays. Not a lot of baserunners and when there is, the next batter is more likely to strikeout or hit a flyball than hit a grounder. It's not a bad or unlucky thing... just probability.

True. I don’t really think of it as bad, just interesting, and the lower GB% does definitely have an impact like you said.

I do associate you with having a higher than normal tolerance for flyballs pitchers. Not that it isn’t working for you.
