2062.59 Miscommunication Leads to Missed Start for Bob Anderson

"I was certain our training staff said that we needed to shut Bob Anderson down for a few days. They claim that's not what they said at all. Fortunately we've got it figured out and Ghumer went out there and shoved when we needed him to. Now, especially with the injury to Bandit, we've got to sit down and map out how our rotation lines up the next couple of weeks. I'm just glad we get to write Bob's name on the lineup card."

That was Charlotte manager Walt Whitworth's statement about why Ghumer Angara was the starting pitcher for the Flyers in a recent game against the Brooklyn Robins when Bob Anderson was originally scheduled to pitch.

"I don't know." said team trainer Jorge Luna. "I really don't know how he got that from what I said. I just suggested that we limit Anderson to 100 pitches in his next few starts to try to make sure he's fresh for the postseason, assuming we do get there. Apparently, Walt thought I said he needed to be benched for 100 days or some shit like that."

The two men got together after the Brooklyn game and got everything straightened out.

Whitworth was asked why Arturo Trevino started Sunday's game instead of Anderson after they realized what had happened.

"We couldn't give Bob the start on Sunday because of how his bullpen sessions lined up. We're working now on deciding which game in this series makes the most sense for him to take the mound. As for Arturo, he'd had a couple of strong outings out of the pen earlier in the week so we figured we'd let him take that spot since those lined up with what would have been days for him to pitch on the side anyway."

The Flyers have 15 games remaining on the schedule, and with the way their off days line up, Anderson will likely pitch 3 or 4 more times this season. Whitworth had this to say about the situation.

"See, we have to hope we win the division but plan to play in the Geohagen. If we're a wildcard team, then we'll need to have our rotation in a good spot for that first series right after the season ends. If we do take the Atlantic we have time to get everyone set up because of the bye. So, if we start Anderson on Monday, he gets 4 more starts in the regular season, meaning we have a better chance to win the division. However, if we don't earn the bye then Bob wouldn't be available to pitch until game 3 of the Geohagen. If we start Bob later this week, then he'll only get 3 starts before the end of the season but he would be able to start game 1 of the wildcard series. We've really got to think this through."

When asked if there would be any changes to how Luna delivers his suggestions going forward, the trainer had this to say.

"You're damn right. I'm gonna give Walt a pop quiz over what I just told him before I leave his office." The trainer laughed at his own joke. "Nah, we'll just make sure we clarify everything so nothin' like this happens again."
