2062.36 Charlotte Drafts Starting Pitcher in First Round

Post by Krathan » Thu Feb 20, 2025 5:00 pm

Since Nathan Garrison and his team took over in late 2055, Charlotte has made 6 first round draft picks and selected 5 position players and 1 two-way player. (When he was drafted, Jacquot Natta was viewed as a 3B first, with a slight possibility of him pitching some in the majors.) In 2062, the Flyers changed pace by selecting a Starting Pitcher with the 19th overall pick in the draft.

The Flyers made right handed pitcher Emilio Carrillo their top pick this year. Carrillo will turn 19 at the end of this month, and spent the first two months of this year playing for the Central America Conquistadors in the International Finishing Consortium. Carillo and his teammates won the league championship against the South America Gulls, with Carillo starting the first and final games of the series that the Conquistadors won 4 games to 1.

Carrillo led all qualified pitchers on his team in ERA with a 3.67 mark. His record of 2-3, and 1-0 in the postseason, are more an indication of his usage than of the caliber of his pitching. Carrillo was only left in the game past the 5th inning one during the regular season, a game in which he allowed just 1 run on 4 hits and 2 walks with 7 strikeouts in 8.1 innings. Carrillo started 8 regular season games, pitched 34.1 innings, allowed 31 hits, and 5 walks. He struck out 43 batters on the year. He finished the season with an impressive FIP- of 58. Carillo's 3.67 ERA is an impressive number in a league with an average ERA of 7.85. He received the second most votes for the IFC's Pitcher of the Year award.

Carrillo is a ground ball pitcher who throws a fastball slider and changeup. All three pitches have room to develop. His fastball currently tops out between 90-92 mph. That is actually an increase from the velocity he showed during his recently completed season.

His stuff is currently rated 4 with a potential of 5. His movement is rated 5 with 6 potential. His ability to limit home runs is currently rated 5 with a potential of 7. His control is currently rated 5 with a potential of 7 as well. His stamina is rated 6. Carrillo's current overall rating is 35 with a potential of 60.

If Carrillo can meet his current potentials, he should be a successful pitcher at the BBA level. If he can continue to find more velocity, and increase his stuff a bit, then he might be even better. At just 19 year of age, that seems like a possibility.

Carrillo will likely begin his career with either the A level Danville Dodos or the AA level New Bern Bears.

I think he’s a MOR starter if he simply fills out.

I agree. He should add velocity to get a stuff bump.
