At this point in the season, the Charlotte Flyers are in a familiar position. The Flyers have earned a postseason berth as a wildcard team each of the last two years. They are currently tied for the final wildcard spot in the Johnson League with 44 games to play. What will it take for the Flyers to get back to the postseason for a third consecutive season?
According to Stats+, the Flyers have a 3.3% chance to win the Atlantic Division and a 60.3% chance to make the playoffs. Those are the 5th highest odds. That sounds pretty good but the teams still have to play the games to see who gets in.
The Flyers have been good in close games this year. They are 18-13 in games decided by 1 run and 12-4 in extra inning games. Despite the fact that some key bullpen pitchers have struggled over the last week or so, the team’s relief corps has the 6th best ERA in the JL. It wasn’t that long ago that they were 14th in that category. The bullpen needs to continue to pitch at a high level in order to make sure the Flyers can keep winning those close games.
The Flyers have played well at home this year. In 61 home games this season, the Flyers are 36-25, good for a .590 winning percentage. Charlotte was especially good at home against the Frontier Division, posting a home record of 21-11 in interdivisional play. The Flyers will need to play better at home against the Atlantic as they are near .500 against them at FDF this year, with a record of 15-14. An improved second half at home against the Atlantic could go a long way toward giving the Flyers a chance at postseason play.
The Flyers have struggled on the road so far this year. In 57 road games this season, Charlotte is 25-32 for a winning percentage of just .438. The Flyers had an especially tough time against the Frontier Division with a road record of 13-19. They do still have a losing record against the Atlantic, but it is much closer to .500 at 12-13. In the team’s final 44 games of the regular season, they have 20 home games and 24 road games remaining. The Flyers are going to have to play better on the road if they want to return to the postseason.
