The Flyers players were already tired when they got to Jacksonville after a 13 inning game against Charm City on Sunday. They had no idea how much worse things would get.
The hotel the team was supposed to stay at had been overtaken by a swarm of zombies earlier in the day. Team officials were unaware of this fact prior to arriving because the hotel workers had all either been eaten or turned into zombies themselves.
The Flyers bus pulled into the hotel parking lot and some of the quicker zombies began to run toward the vehicle. The bus driver started screaming and then backed out of the lot as quickly as he could. With an impressive bit of driving skill, he was able to get the bus back onto the street and away from the ravenous horde.
They found what looked like a safe lot at a local strip mall to park and regroup. The players got off the bus to stretch and move around a bit while the team officials huddled inside the bus trying to find a new place to stay.
A couple of the players, including Tadataka Yoshikawa, fished their bats out of the bus just in case there were any zombies that hadn’t been visible as the bus pulled into the lot.
It turned out to be a good thing they did that, as several zombies came streaming out of a broken down Subway restaurant. Yoshikawa started swinging with great force and sent multiple zombies to the ground. Andres Gonzales had grabbed a bucket of baseballs. He and Buwono Mainaky started throwing them at the zombies to fight them off. Other players started to run back to the bus and climbed on board. The players who were fighting off the zombies got enough clearance to make a break for it and found their way back into the bus as well.
Once again, the bus took off. This time, the driver knew where he was going. Team officials had located a hotel that they had been assured would be safe. Unfortunately for the players, the hotel was 2 hours away.
Once they arrived at the hotel, the players checked into their rooms and tried to sleep. The hotel was not as nice as the accommodations the players were used to, but at least there were no zombies. Well, until the player closed their eyes. Most of the players on the team had trouble sleeping throughout the entire series. They could think of nothing but the horrifying zombies that had tried to kill them.
The Flyers played sloppy baseball during the 3 game series, and got swept by the Jacksonville baseball club. Yoshikawa, Gonzales, and Mainaky were among the players who struggled the most in the series.
Gonzales allowed 3 late runs to squander an excellent start by Jaquot Natta.
Yoshikawa had only 1 hit in 10 at bats in the series.
Mainaky struggled with his control and gave up 4 runs in 6 innings after allowing just 1 run in his first 14 innings of the season.
The Flyers were thrilled to leave Jacksonville once the series ended. They were much more concerned with being alive than the fact that they had suffered a 3 game sweep.
The effects of the nightmarish trip to Jacksonville don”t seem to have followed the team home. Charlotte won 2 of 3 against the Montreal Blazers to finish out the week.
Several players said that they were not looking forward to returning to Jacksonville later this season.
The attempts to eradicate the zombie hordes from the Jacksonville area are still underway. The Flyers definitely hope the situation is under control before their next trip to the city.
