In the first round, the Flyers selected Ziaul-Haq bin Dhul-Faqir from the San Fernando Bears. Bin Dhul-Faqir is a solid defensive catcher who has thrown out 42.4% of the runners who have attempted to steal against him in his 6 minor league seasons. His career minor league wRC+ of 86 is actually misleading. It is skewed higher by a strong showing in A ball (129 in 136 games). He is coming off of a rough AAA season in which he hit .196 with a wRC+ of 60. He does have a good eye and is able to draw quite a few walks. His OBP is typically more that 100 points higher than his AVG. He bats from the left side, making him someone who could potentially be useful in a platoon role if he shows that he can hit a little bit in Spring Training. There is a pretty decent chance he ends up back in San Fernando at some point as he hasn’t proved that he can do enough at the plate to stick around on the big league roster all year.
In the second round, the Flyers selected a pitcher. Rick Clarijs came over from the Twin Cities River Monsters. Clarijs was once a highly regarded UMEBA prospect. He has pitched in 233 GBC games in his career and even saw action in 17 BBA games with Vancouver in 2053. His career 3.42 ERA in the GBC was solid, including a league leading 2.75 ERA as a starter in 2049. His stint with Vancouver was a struggle, ending up with an ERA of 9.98, thanks in large part, to a BB% of 21.25 in 15.1 innings. He had an excellent 2057 season in AAA but was less impressive in 2058. It also seems unlikely he will stick with Charlotte throughout the season. He will, however, have an opportunity to show what he can do in Spring training
