Juan Marroquin’s opt-out decision and the team’s two other pending free agents.
First, we will discuss Marroquin. He is currently the 15th ranked starter in the league according to RonCo’s rankings. His contract for the next 2 seasons is only $7.6 million, which is well below market value. Marroquin would certainly be leaving a lot of money on the table if he were to forgo his opt out. We are hearing that he will in fact opt out of the rest of his contract and become a free agent. That will mean the Flyers have a little bit more cap space to work with for this season.
Next, we will discuss C Farid bin Mubarak. He is signed a 1 year contract last season and posted 1.2 WAR as the starter this season. It is unlikely the team tris to bring bin Mubarak back for the 2059 season. They will probably either hand over the reins to 2058 AAA starter and 7th round 2057 draft pick Lawrence Stewart or bring in another one year veteran.
The only other player with an expiring contract is SS Elvan Masuki. He was acquired in the middle of the season and played solid defense while hitting .276 after the trade. With the recent injury history of the Flyers’ middle infield, they may consider using some of the money saved on Marroquin to bring him back if his demands are reasonable. He would have to come down from the rumored $10 million demands from earlier in the season for that to happen.
In this edition of Flight Log, we take a look at what we are hearing about 2059.1 Flight Log-Marroquin’s option
