2058.61 Flight Log Trade Deadline Recap

In this edition of Flight Log, we take a look at Charlotte’s 2058 trade deadline, including moves made to n the weeks leading up to the deadline.

The first trade made by GM Nathan Garrison and his team was to. July 1. Charlotte acquired All-Star closer Alejandro Chavez from Jacksonville for a pair of promising young outfielders, Shu-yaan Zheng and Andres Gonzales. Chavez has 14 saves in 24 games since joining the team, helping to improve the team’s bullpen that had struggled all year up until that point.

The next 2 trades were both announced on August 19.

Garrison teamed up with Jacksonville again to acquire veteran starting pitcher Juan Marroquin in exchange for another outfield prospect, Thomas Blanchard.
The other trade was made in response to the Flyers losing their top 2 shortstop options to injury at the same time. Garrison decided that he needed a big league shortstop to fill the void. He acquired veteran Elvan Masuki from Des Moines for 3 prospects, including pitcher Sharif Qutuz, first baseman Arturo Sandoval, and catcher Masakado Matsunaga[/url].

Garrison indicated that he thought he was done making deals after that busy day. However, 1 week later, the team made one more move. The Flyers added outstanding starting pitcher Jim “91 Cents” Fleming from the Nashville Bluebirds for a pair of highly regarded prospects and OF/DH Fawwaz Amn. The prospects were 2058 2nd round pick, 3B Isaac Buggins and 2057 1st round pick, SS Lucas McNeill, Jr..

The Flyers gave up a lot of good prospects in these deals but they have dramatically improved the club for the race to the pennant. These moves will be interesting to track over the next few years.

I’ll be rooting for Fleming afar from the FL.

Aggressive but I think you added legitimately good players.

Fleming looks awesome in that Flyers cap. Just saying.

I'm not going to kill the trades because I love when teams actually try hard to win. But I would have held on to McNeil and built around him, Bates, Ruiz, Natta, Christian, Gonzalez, and some other guys you have in a deep farm system.

The parade of corner outfielders that left is ok cause you have enough similar players and they can be replaced easily. But a franchise shortstop prospect is going to be tough to replace.

Of course if Flemming wins you a Brewster and McNeil loses a point of range, then I will admit I'm an idiot. I actually hope that happens due to my hatred for both Nashville and the McNeil family.

If Fleming nets him a Monty it was worth it regardless of how McNeill pans out.

Moving McNeill was definitely the toughest thing to come to terms with. I think he’s going to be really good and I don’t have anyone who could legitimately play SS in the bigs left in my system now. If Fleming wasn’t still under control for a couple more years I wouldn’t have even considered it. I need to capitalize on Fleming’s time with the team for sure.

That’s why this last sim was so rough. Falling from tied for a wildcard a lot to 3 games back with only 16 to play was definitely not what I wanted to see happen.

I feel I could have gotten much more value for Fleming, but was happy to take McNeill in hopes of getting me to write again. He's also gonna be a good middle infielder someday (hopefully) and didn't wanna trade Fleming for a bunch of COF.
