The week began with a double header at home against Edmonton. Game 1 was a 5-2 Charlotte win with 5.2 strong innings on the mound by Andres Gonzales. Game 2 was a 17-3 route by the Flyers with home runs by Farid bin Mubarak, Fawwaz Amin, and Manny Toledo.
Next up is as a 4 game home series against Calgary. The Pioneers won game 1 by a score of 6-3. Then Charlotte won 3-2 thanks to an outstanding pitching effort by Little Johnny Rasmussen. Calgary jumped all over Mauro Mendoza, handing him his first loss of the season, for an 8-3 final in game 3. The Flyers secured a series split with a 14-9 win, thanks in part to a Tadataka Yoshikawa grand slam.
The week ended with the first two games of a 4 game set in Boise. The Spuds won the opener 7-4 as Andres Gonzales had his first bad start since returning to the rotation. Game 2 was also a Boise win. This time it was by a score of 5-3.
The Flyers end the month of June tied for the final wildcard spot, 6 games behind the hot Charm City Jimmies for the Atlantic lead.
We said a few weeks ago that the Flyers would likely need a strong June because all but 4 of their games in July are on the road. They didn’t really have the kind of month they were looking for, finishing only 15-13. Now they need to find a way to stay in the race during their long stretches on the road. First up, they finish their series in Boise and head to San Antonio before the All-Star Break. Then they will finish their tour of the Frontier with 4 game sets in Rocky Mountain, Phoenix, and Las Vegas with just a single series vs Mexico City mixed in. They will finish the month with a big Atlantic City matchup against New Orleans.
