It had been a stroke of luck, really. Walt had enjoyed the flow of information while he had it. L-Pain thought he looked weak when he wore glasses had a mental block against putting contacts in his eyes. When he went in for a corrective eye surgery consultation, he happened to make his appointment with one of Walt’s associates, Dr. Edwards.

The corrective surgery was easy for Edwards but it was only the second time that he had also planted one of Walt’s experimental observational lenses on a patient. The doctor was just the tiniest bit off in his placement of the device and L-Pain was dealing with some occasional pain as a result. He had called the doctor’s office at least 8 times in the last six months since his surgery complaining of headaches, each time a bit more agitated. Edwards always assured him that it was a temporary condition that should clear up soon. He figured that L-Pain wasn’t particularly bright, so he wasn’t too worried that the lens would be discovered, but also wanted to avoid a situation in which an angry L-Pain wanted to take out his frustrations on the doctor or his assistants.

For that reason, Edwards was glad when Walt called to let him know he didn’t need to worry about L-Pain anymore. The brute had done something stupid leading to his own death. The doctor thanked his longtime friend for the comforting news and went about his day with a renewed sense of contentment.

Walt, on the other hand, was frustrated with L-Pain’s death. He had learned about the Long Beach Water situation through his unwitting spy but would no longer have access to the inner workings of the Sacramento “baseball” operations. There was more going on with that organization and Walt wanted to know what it was. That was a problem for another day. For now, at least he knew about the water. He had plenty of work to do on rhat front and it was time to get things moving.
