Well it's time to check in with the Cougars again who were playing uninspiring if not terrible .500 baseball when last we wrote....
Oh my God! What happened?
The turning point in the season is pretty obvious. That would be the May 27 trade of pitcher Alaric Wullenweber to the Rocky Mountain Oysters. The Cougars got some nice players in return but the clubhouse morale has really suffered. Fan interest has also suffered which is of more interest to the owner, but fan interest doesn't score runs. The players, however, can fail to do so when their ownership has seemingly given up on them which is how they interpreted this trade. The clubhouse mood is downright hostile when any member of the front office comes in the room, so they've avoided it. Wullenweber has only put up a 102 ERA+ for his new team in 49.2 innings so it's not like his production is desperately missed.
The Cougars however have missed him, or missed something. Since the trade the team has gone 12-29. Compare that to their record before the trade of 26-25 and you can see the difference.
Of course, GM Seth Moland-Kovash didn't make this trade with this season in mind. This was a trade made with eyes on the future, but I don't think anyone imagined it would be this bad in the short term. Michael Pedarzolli has started to make an impact with the Cougars but the return is really expected to be in pitchers Jamie Barber and Curt Fields. It doesn't look good from a trade value perspective, but only time will tell.

It looks like Curt Fields is injured for the season and then becomes a free agent. How is he expected to be part of the return?

Fields will come of the IL in 1-2 weeks. That leaves 2 months of playing left for the season. And, there's also this thing called an extension.BaseClogger wrote: ↑Mon Apr 03, 2023 9:39 amIt looks like Curt Fields is injured for the season and then becomes a free agent.
