It's been quite a mixed bag in the Cougars clubhouse after the first few weeks of the season. The Cougars opened the season hot, going 6-1 in the first week. The good times have not lasted though, as the team has gone 3-9 since that point and have dropped their last 6, including back to back sweeps on a dismal road trip out west to Edmonton and Las Vegas. The Cougars come home to host division rivals Atlantic City and Charm City. It is hoped that some home cooking (maybe Krispy Kreme's) will get the team going.
In the first 19 games a few elements of the team have started to reveal themselves. Right fielder Qadir bin Gamal came out of spring with a slight shoulder problem but that has not slowed him down at all. He is hitting .316/.437/.386 on the young season. He is an on-base machine. Pedro Diaz leads the Cougs in batting average, with a hot .366 at this point. Veteran Bret Powers has turned on the power recently, with 3 of his 6 season home runs on the recent road trip. But he is still scuffling, with a 79 OPS+ holding the team back from the DH position.
The rotation (with the exception of Nobuhito Kan who was just moved to the pen) has been a strength but the bullpen is looking for answers. Perhaps Kan will be better served there.

Unfortunately, Jan’s starting days are over. Good bullpen piece though. Might even consider a reliever conversion in the offseason.
