Hope springs eternal. Grass smells fresh or at least needs to be mowed. Everybody is in the best shape of their lives and the nagging injuries and aches and pains of a long baseball season haven't started yet. Everybody is set to have a Ruthian season and it all looks good.
Children in Charlotte are begging their parents to take them out to the old ballyard to see their heroes and bets are being placed in the online gaming venues of your choice.
Charlotte came through spring training nearly injury-free checking off the most important box of goals for any spring training. The only exception is heavy-hitter Qadir bin Gamal who came up with a sore shoulder on the last day of camp. He won't be placed on the IL as it's a minor injury at this point but he might get an extra day or two of rest for the first week just to make sure this does not become something lingering.
Spring stats and results are, of course, mostly meaningless. But that doesn't stop us from trying to impute some meaning to them. Charlotte had some great stand-out performances from people who they'll be counting on. Bin Gamal hit 4 home runs and walked 12 times in his 62 plate appearances, a rate which would look good if he could keep it up over a full season. Newcomer Bret Powers made the front office look good, batting for a .339/.355/.712 clip this spring.
Some real highlights came on the pitching side however as Ruben bin Majid al Din paced the starting rotation with a 3.31 ERA in his 4 starts. The performance was enough to win him the ball on Opening Day as manager Antonio Zuniga announced as the team broke camp.
The relievers also look strong to start the season, highlighted by closer Jae-Ho Chang who looks to shake off a clunker of an outing his last time out, but had not given up a run to that point. Fellow reliever Sebastian Siebert has had some time with the big club in the past but his roster spot was by no means certain coming into camp. After striking out 11 in 5.2 innings, he will play a role in this bullpen to start the year.
The Cougars start with 3 at Rockville before the home opener on Saturday against Brooklyn. The bunting is ready and the popcorn is popped. Play ball!
