The reigning JL Egan Award winner, Augusto Ramírez, was fined $25,000 and suspended for 1 game by Charlotte Cougars GM Brett Golden today. Ramírez was reportedly 30 minutes late showing up at the ballpark, one of the few team rules that GM Golden is known to enforce relentlessly.
Ramirez tried to explain to Manager Abdur Rashid Awan that he had been stuck in traffic but Awan informed Ramirez that he knows the rule and that being late is unacceptable. After all, the team was on the road in Phoenix so if Ramirez had just taken the team bus, his arrival time would not have been an issue. Also, when taking into account that the team hotel is only 8 blocks from the stadium, there should be absolutely no excuse for being 30 minutes late.
To make matters worse, it seems as though Ramirez has also been demoted to a 7th inning role, though that is entirely related to his early season struggles.
