C-Notes 2051.04 - Golden Blows His Load

Post by GoldenOne » Fri May 27, 2022 2:31 pm

At a time when it looked like the Charlotte Cougars playoff run would be over and the long rebuilding process would begin, someone forgot to pass that word along to GM Brett Golden. When the team declined OF Ricardo Ruíz's option, other teams began salivating over the potential for SS/CF Robert 'Tosser' Menzies to become available.

GM Golden had other ideas. With Ruiz and several other players being let go for Free Agency, and CF Arthur Daniel being traded to Twin Cities, the Cougars had close to $40M in cap space to spend. And spend Golden would!

In the opening days of Free Agency, GM Golden decided to waste no time, signing 4 new players. First was C Bruce McKinley. The 29yo McKinley signed a 3-year, $16.75M contract. With almost half of that money coming in the 3rd year as a Team Option, it'll be interesting to see what happens in a couple of years. McKinley will split time with the aging Roelof Klooster - McKinley being better defensively while Klooster brings a little more offensively. No doubt this is now one of the best Catcher tandems in the league.

Next up was SP John McClain. The 28yo out of Detroit isnt an Ace but he fits in well with the Cougars and their park. His 3-year, $7.45M contract certainly wont be a detriment to the team either.

Looking to add some power to the outfield, and bring some more seats to the stadium, Golden next signed COF Bret Powers. Powers will shift over to LF and will get a full-time role instead of being the part-time player he was in Yellow Springs. And thanks to that part time role with the Nine, the Cougars were able to get Powers at the cheap price of a 4-year, $52M contract.

But, the linchpin in the new acquisitions was OF Aaron 'Slowpoke' Haney. The 30yo Haney signed a 6-year, $120M contract (though most expect that 6th year, TO for $24M to be voided) and seems to be slotted to play RF for the Cougars which should not be a problem with his high adaptability. Haney has been sought after by the Cougars in trade talks for many years now, it seems there was no way GM Golden was going to let him get away while he was a Free Agent.

GM Golden certainly blew his load this offseason. But, it is already making fans happy with Fan Interest estimated being back at 100%, season ticket sales seeing a rise (even with ST prices being at their highest), and estimated single-game ticket sales to be near capacity every night. The load may have been blown but it sounds like Golden will see a reload before too long this season, and maybe even find the Cougars back into the playoffs.
