C-Notes 2049.01 - Cougar Still Top Cat

Post by GoldenOne » Sat Nov 13, 2021 10:46 am

Another year, another Jason Egan Reliever Award for the Charlotte Cougars. For the 2048 season however, the winner is no longer Keijo Reini. (Reini joined the Sacramento Mad Popes as a Free Agent last season and won the Frick League Egan award instead.)

The 2048 Egan winner was Charlotte Cougars Closer Ashton Brooks. Brooks is a converted starter that was moved to the bullpen in 2046 following an 11-month absence after a torn flexor tendon. In 2046, in 10 games, Brooks showed an excellent adjustment to the bullpen. In 2047, he saw action in 77 games in a set-up role for Reini. With Reini's departure, Brooks took over the roll of closer full-time in 2048.

While not as dominant as some of Reini's seasons, Brooks performed extremely well as the Cougars' closer. In 72 games (80.1 innings) this season, Brooks found himself with a 1-5 record while notching 32 saves. A big difference between Brooks and Reini is Brooks' ability to keep the ball in the park. Reini's lack of movement often saw him among the league leaders in giving up the long ball. Brooks' 2048 season saw him give up 2 homeruns. B

Brooks' 4.5 WAR season also saw him striking out 131 batters while walking only 22. His 1.01 ERA and 0.80 WHIP help demonstrate just how good Brooks was this season.

The Cougars may have found their replacement for the dominant Reini, the worry is that Brooks will be heading into the 2049 season on the last year of his contract. Will Brooks be easier to keep around than Reini was or will the Cougars have to be on the lookout for their next replacement in the closer role again this season? Either way, dont count the Cougars out as being in the race for the Egan moving forward.
