C-Notes 2048.08 - The Cougars Call

Post by GoldenOne » Sat Oct 23, 2021 9:24 am

Today the Charlotte Cougars have announced that they will be calling up 3 players to add to the major league roster for the remainder of the season. Those players are RP Stanley McClure, SS Carlos 'Big Stick' Benítez, and 2B/OF Damodaragoun Neela. "While we understand our AAA team in Richmond only has a one-game lead in their division, the Cougars are clawing their way to earn a playoff berth and could use some help. We expect each of these players to have a significant role on our club next season so they may as well start helping out now," said GM Golden about the moves.

The 21-year old McClure was a Supplemental 1st Round pick (37th overall) in 2048. Joining the Panthers right after the draft, McClure has pitched in 16 games earning 1 Save with an ERA of 3.09. He has 40 strikeouts to 10 walks. McClure is slightly more dominant against right-handed batters than left and his devastating fastball-slider combination should serve him well in the BBA.

The 23-year old Big Stick Benítez was a Supplemental 1st Round pick (37th overall) in 2047. Benítez spent the 2047 season at AA New Bern before being promoted to AAA Richmond this season. While Benítez's .267 average seems like it might be a high mark for him, his .385 OBP and .528 OPS seem like they might be career averages. Those marks, a 164 wRC+, and a 6.3 WAR in AAA this season certainly merit giving him a chance to prove himself in the big league for September.

The 23-year old Neela took a slightly different path to the majors. Signing a minor league contract with Des Moines in 2043 out of India, Neela was traded later that year to Charlotte. Since 2044, Neela has worked hard at each level and really seemed to blossom this season in Richmond. In his first full season in Richmond, Neela is hitting .295/.356/.464 with 15 homeruns and has earned a 5.2 WAR, all while seeing time at 2B, SS, and all three outfield positions. Neela's versatility on the field and his skills in the batter's box have earned him a shot with the Cougars.
