C-Notes 2048.04 - Reini Who?

Post by GoldenOne » Tue Sep 21, 2021 5:32 pm

Pitcher Keijo 'Coach' Reini will always be the answer to at least one trivia question - who was the first-ever draft pick of the Charlotte Cougars? Reini was selected from the Edmonton Jackrabbits with the 2nd overall pick by the Cougars in the 2039 Expansion Draft. (As a side note, the Jackrabbits had just traded for Reini 5 months earlier, giving up the venerable Dusty Rhodes to the San Fernando Bears in the process.)

Reini wasnt much at the time - just an 11/2/5 POT starting pitcher. Reini was thrown right into AAA in 2040 and in 2041, as a SP, pitched 29 games, going 18-7 with a 3.88 ERA, striking out 257 to only 70 walks. But when pitches come in that straight, if you can get ahold of one....well, he also gave up 34 HRs in 201 innings.

Reini was called up to the Cougars in September 2041 and spent most of 2042 and 2043 in the Cougars' rotation. Before the 2043 season, he saw a slight bump in his Stuff (to 13) and then saw his Stuff rating bump to 15 right before the 2044 season. That was when the Cougars decided to throw him into the Stopper role to see what he could do. He excelled. Right before the 2045 season, Reini bumped to 18/4/7 and then threw 154 innings in 73 games striking out a whopping 341 batters. In 2046 and 2047, Reini didnt appear in as many games and his innings were more limited, only going 114 innings both seasons. He still struck out 230 and 253 batters, respectively.

Following the 2047 season, Reini wanted the kind of payday that the Cougars were not willing to pay him, nor could they even afford. So, he sat as a Free Agent a little longer than was expected but ended up with the Sacramento Mad Popes, where he is continuing his earlier dominance.

So, how do you replace someone like that? For the Cougars, they decided to give Ashton Brooks a shot. The Cougars were not expecting the strikeout numbers of Reini or even the amount of inning or appearances from the converted starter, but so far this season, Cougars fans are not lamenting for Reini.

So far, Brooks has seen action in 24 games (on pace for a surprising 78 games.) In those 24 games, Brooks has no wins, 1 loss, and 10 saves. He's gone 27.2 innings, a pace that would see him ending with 89.2 innings; far from what the Cougars saw from Reini. However, Brooks also has a 0.33 ERA, a 0.72 WHIP, 51 strikeouts (and only 5 walks and 0 HRs (on pace for 165, 16, and 0 for the season.) All this while giving up a BABIP of .357 in the 15 hits he has given up.

So, while not quite Keijo Reini, Ashton Brooks is doing a fantastic job for a far lower price tag. Keep it up Mr. Brooks!
