C-Notes 2047.06 - The Review

Post by GoldenOne » Tue Aug 03, 2021 1:53 pm

Predictions are fun. It gives everyone something to argue about in support of their team that the prognosticator may not have understood completely. Everyone knows that their is so much uncertainty in a baseball season that a long thought out prediction could be thrown out the door after the first day of the season after that star pitcher blows out an elbow. Trades are made, Managers are replaced, and rookies make a name for themselves. You just never know.

That doent mean we also dont like to look back at those early season predictions and point out just how wrong they were. For the Cougars, the spring training predictions said they would finish 4th in the JL Atlantic and end with an 86-76 record. In an effort to appease its fanbase, the Cougars Front Office responded quickly to those predictions. But even those statements and predictions only offer a slight bit of insider information when it comes to the season; anything can still happen.

However, with only 1 game left in the season, let's have a quick review of those media guide predictions and see how they worked out:
-- Record of 86-76, 4th in the JL Atlantic: The Cougars are currently leading the Atlantic by 1 game with a record 93-68. (Those 93 wins also ties last season's all-time high for the Cougars.)

-- SP Kyle Smallwood was going to have a hard time making up for the loss of Armando 'Commie Child' Feliciano: Commie Child tore his bicep on 3 August and is out for the rest of the season. Commie Child finished 2046 with a 4.6 WAR. In his 2047 season, Smallwood will finish with a 7.1 WAR - not bad for a rookie!

-- The lost WAR from Commie Child, 2B/3B Roberto Viramontas, and 2B Marvin Isworth would be too much to overcome: Commie Child (4.6 WAR), Viramontas (3.7 WAR), and Isworth (1.9 WAR) combined for a total of 10.2 WAR. We've already commented on Smallwood's 7.1 WAR. Viramontas was re-signed by the Cougars (following the release of the media guide) has a 4.2 WAR so far this season. That 11.3 more than makes up for those couple of losses.

-- SS Robert Menzies, CF Lorenzo Bueno, RF Ramón Pagán, and 3B Rafael Gutiérrez would lead the offensive charge in 2047: Menzies all but matched last season's WAR (5.7 to 5.6 this season), Bueno tailed off a little (3.3 to 0.8, but only played in 110 games), Pagan made up for Bueno though with a 4.0 WAR (compared to 2.7 last season), and Gutierrez left some on the table (0.8 to last season's 2.1WAR.) Gutierrez had a good season, but spent too much time on the IL.

-- C Roelof Klooster needed to do more this season: Klooster did that with a 5.3 WAR compared to 2046's 1.2.

-- Questions in the team's power and in predicted starting 2B Hakim Ngowa: The Cougars moved into 15th place in the JL for HRs the last week of the season. That's not how the Cougars are built. However, ending the season 4th in the JL in Runs Scored and 1st in OPS should make up for it. Ngowa was a back-up that only played in 30 games for the Cougars. He was released on 4 August and is now playing in Cairo.

-- Pitching is solid behind SP Francisco Franco, SP Emilio Brazini, and CL Keijo Reini: Franco was off some this year with only a 4.3 WAR (compared to 2046's 5.2); Brazini regressed quite a bit and is barely holding on as the 5th starter on the team (yet still has a 1.6 WAR for the season), and Reini - well, despite throwing the same 114 innings, his WAR dropped from a 5.7 to a 4.8 behind 23 more Ks but also 9 more HRs given up.

So, where does that leave us? Oh yeah - 1 game left, same number of wins last season, and a 1 game lead in the Atlantic with a playoff spot sealed up. Predictions are fun but so is proving them wrong. (No offense Chris, its a tough job and one I dont want.)

Go Cougars!!

Ah, Ngowa.
Actually he is sitting in Cairo, not playing.
He'll be a free agent very very soon.
Give him another chance?

Not in Charlotte. He was a cheap, defensive/injury replacement that didnt fit in the budget after I made a trade.
