C-Notes 2047.04 - Big Wood for Smallwood

In the BBA's 2047 Media Guide, the Charlotte Cougars record was tied heavily to the loss of 2 players - SP Armando 'Commie Child' Feliciano (4.6 WAR) and 2B/3B Roberto Viramontas (3.7 WAR). Yes, 8.3 WAR is a lot of ground to make up if a team wants to stay in the hunt for the Division, or at the very least, the Wild Card.

Well, Viramontas was resigned and is currently on pace for a 3.3 WAR season. Seems manageable. Commie Child took his talents, and $13.5M payout, to the team that bounced Charlotte in the first-round of the 2046 playoffs, the Calgary Pioneers. Feliciano this season - currently on pace for a 2.0 WAR season.

What was it that kept the Charlotte Front Office from panicking too much though? Well, last year's pitching staff was strong. Real strong. And that was before P Ashton Brooks came back in August following a torn flexor tendon in his elbow. And that was before the young phenom was called up in September, SP Kyle Smallwood.

Smallwood showed some promise last season, pitching in 11 games, starting 2, going 2-1 with a 1.67 ERA, a 0.81 WHIP, and striking out 33 compared to him walking 11 batters.

But Smallwood's performance in 2047 is making every Cougars fan forget about Feliciano. So far in 2047, Smallwood has started 12 games, going 7-2, with an ERA of 2.12, a WHIP of 0.98, striking out 99 and walking 14 batters. Oh yeah, he's also won the JL Rookie of the Month Award two months in a row to start the season (April and May.) His current 2.9 WAR and projected 7.8 WAR is by far the leader of the pitching staff.

With the rest of the pitching staff starting to return to their 2046 form, and the offense slightly improved, when the defense gets itself under control, these Cougars are going to manhandle a lot of teams in the JL the deeper we get into the summer. And Smallwood will find himself leading the way.
