C-Notes 2047.02 - Charlotte Takes Carlos

Post by GoldenOne » Sat Jun 12, 2021 9:32 am

In the first round of the 2047 BBA Draft, the Charlotte Cougars selected two guys named Carlos. And they both play SS. Both are also 21 and hail from the Caribbean. Both are also almost fully developed and have a shot at breaking into the big league club as early as 2048. This should be fun.

With the 20th overall pick the Cougars selected 21-year old SS Carlos Gutierrez from the Netherlands Antilles. Gutierrez makes above average contact with decent gap power and doesnt strike out a lot. He wont be hitting a lot of HRs but the Cougars expect Gutierrez to get on base a decent amount, and run. Gutierrez has great speed and base-running instincts and is one of the best overall bunters the Cougars have had in their system. The Cougars are also intrigued by Gutierrez's defensive abilities. Outside of pitcher and catcher, there doesnt seem to be a position the Cougars would be afraid to play Gutierrez - similar to how they feel about their current All Star SS, Robert Menzies.

Taken with the 4th pick in the 1st Round Supplemental (for losing Armando 'Commie Child' Feliciano to Calgary in FA,) is 21-year old SS Carlos 'Big Stick' Benitez from the Dominican Republic. Benitez came up through the college ranks with the Santo Domingo Marauders playing 2B but his range will certainly allow him to play the SS position. Benitez has average contact but has a top-of-the-charts eye and equally as good gap power. He has slightly above average power for a middle infielder as well. While Benitez is fast, he has average skills when running the bases. Much like Gutierrez, Benitez can play almost anywhere on the field as well. His OF skills though would restrict him to LF for any sort of routine play-time. Benitez is another solid player whose versatility will help him find a spot on the BBA roster soon.

When we asked GM Brett Golden why he would select two primarily shortstops that will be ready for the BBA soon in the first round, especially after extending their current All Star SS for another 6 seasons, he replied, "Why not? Everyone needs short-stops, and ones that can play almost anywhere else in the field...even better. And as we have seen, I'm not afraid to trade prospects at any point."
