C-Notes 2046.10 - Smallwood Makes Debut

Post by GoldenOne » Sat Apr 17, 2021 10:34 am

Pitcher Kyle Smallwood, the Charlotte Cougars' 2046 first round draft pick (#5 overall) got the call that told him to find his way down the Jersey Turnpike and get to Atlantic City as soon as possible. The 20-year old lefthander made his way from Newark, where the RIchmond Panthers were playing a series against the NJ Devils, and joined his new teammates in Atlantic City where the Cougars were playing the Gamblers.

While the move may have seemed a little odd at the time - roster expansion was only a few more days away - the move may have been made with a peak towards the post-season. By bringing Smallwood up when he did, GM Golden made Smallwood an eligible player for a playoff roster. When asked about the move, GM Golden commented, "Look, Brooksie wasnt as sharp as we would like after coming off an 11-month elbow injury. I decided to give him a chance to work on some things with less pressure on him to perform."

Smallwood, who has been inserted into the Long Relief role in the bullpen, had been performing well since signing his rookie contract with the Cougars. In 15 games, Smallwood was 4-1 with a 2.17 ERA and 0.89 WHIP in 70.2 innings. And, his ratio of 83 strikeouts to 11 walks was even more impressive.

Since arriving in the BBA, Smallwood has seen action in 2 games. In those 2 games, Smallwood has pitched 3.1 innings without giving up a hit and has struck out 5 while only walking 1.

While the move may have been to let Ashton Brooks get his game back a little more, it certainly wont hurt the Cougars to have someone of Kyle Smallwood's potential to be eligible for the playoff roster if the Cougars are able to make it to the post-season for the first time in team history.

Quick update for those not paying attention - Smallwood has now gone 10.0 innings, 5 games, 0 hits, 14 Ks, 2 walks. Is it too late in the season to try a 6-man rotation?
